Did you know that Great Britain only adopted 1st January as the beginning of the New Year in 1752... prior to that, it was 25th March.

Did you know that the first record of a new year being celebrated is in 2000 BCE, by the Mesopotamians. This fell on the first new moon after the Spring Equinox.

Did you know that homosapians have existed for approximately 190,000 years, but we have only marked New Year's Day as 1st January for approximately 0.23% to 0.14% of our existence.

It is a modern construct that doesn't reflect the rhythms of the earth (either the Northern or Southern hemisphere).

In this part of the world, we are in the depths of a slumbering winter and, apart from a smattering of eager snowdrops, the earth and trees are bare.

So eat that leftover cheese and/or cake, snuggle down, watch Mary Poppins (1960s version) and gently cast an eye to spring and the real new year.

December brings us not one, but two new moons... so here's the second newsletter of the month... you can find the full newsletter via our bio (or sign-up and you'll find it in your inbox) but here's a taster...

I hope this swirly, out of time and space moment of the year is finding you gently floating through the days, as we wave goodbye to Christmas and welcome the coming of the new calendar year. Although, equally, it could find you feeling cut adrift as you navigate the peaks and troughs of family life, festive 'fun' and the smudging of routine...

If you are looking towards the start of next week and want to lay the groundwork for a year of positive intentions for yourself, then take a leisurely scroll through this newsletter.

Over to Luci 👇

Hello, I’m Luci – mother, neuroscientist, and mindfulness coach.

I specialise in the integration of meditation and mindfulness practices into modern-day motherhood and childhood; to expand our moments of serenity, raise our happiness levels, and enhance our emotional connections with our children.

Practicing meditation and mindful living with my son, Luka, has been the foundation for building our beautiful relationship. At 5 years of age, he is already so aware and compassionate, and can communicate his thoughts and feelings eloquently.

Alongside, my personal practice has supported me in processing trauma, handling severe stress, and relieving chronic pain; whilst continuing to show up for my son as the best mama I can be.

Over the years, our practices have naturally adapted to complement our changing needs as a family. For example, I don’t have much time to sit in silent meditation anymore! At Moon, in January 2025, I will be guiding the following group sessions to show you what I’ve learnt from my personal and family mindfulness journey so far (plus quite a bit of insight from the science to the woo).

Our January sessions will focus on the New Year cycle and Winter Solstice: reflecting on the past, embracing the present moment, and setting mindful intentions for the future.

Three facts about me:

🛤️ I love culture and travel (and for some reason, discovering interesting doors)

🎷 I play saxophone in a cover band

🏥 I also work with dementia patients and their carers at UCLH, supporting their entry into clinical trials for new treatments.
